Who’s Behind GuardSourceHQ
I’m Brad. I’ve spent 31 years working in construction, installation, troubleshooting, and service.
That kind of work changes how you look at a project. You stop asking only whether something will work when it is new. You start asking what will happen after years of weather, use, maintenance, and repairs.
When something fails, the visible problem is not always the real problem. A device dropping offline may be caused by power, wiring, distance, network load, heat, or a decision made during installation. Replacing the device without finding the cause often means buying the same problem twice.
That is the thinking I bring to GuardSourceHQ.
How I Evaluate a System
I look at three things:
- How it performs
- How it is likely to fail
- How difficult it will be to service later
Product specifications usually focus on the first one. Homeowners eventually have to deal with all three.
A system that works on a test bench may behave differently after a 150-foot cable run, during the hottest week of summer, on a 10°F night, or when four or five cameras are pulling from the same power supply.
I also believe serviceability should be planned before installation. Equipment should be accessible. Connections should be reachable. Cable routes should allow for repair or replacement. A clean installation that cannot be serviced is not finished properly—it is a future problem hidden from view.
Why the Right Answer Depends on the House
A good product can still be the wrong choice for a particular home.
A system that works well in a smaller house with short cable runs may struggle in a three-story home, a detached garage, a metal-sided building, or a property with 150 feet or more between the equipment and the farthest camera.
Before choosing equipment, I want to know:
- What needs to be seen, and at what distance?
- How far are the cable and power runs — measured, not paced off?
- How much footage needs to be stored?
- What heat, cold, moisture, and sun exposure will the equipment face?
- Who will maintain the system later?
- What happens to the recordings if the internet or cloud service is unavailable?
- Can the important parts be reached, repaired, or replaced?
Once those questions are answered, the product decision becomes much clearer.
Why I Created GuardSourceHQ
Home security has become increasingly technical. Homeowners are expected to understand power budgets, storage calculations, camera coverage, networking, remote access, and digital privacy—often while sorting through material written primarily to sell equipment.
I created GuardSourceHQ to give homeowners a better way to work through those decisions.
The site includes installation guidance, troubleshooting help, buying information, and calculators for storage, PoE power, voltage drop, and camera coverage. The goal is not to push the largest or most expensive system. It is to help you understand what your home actually requires and what trade-offs come with each choice.
How I Approach the Guidance
I explain the decision the same way I would explain it to a friend or neighbor, including the disadvantages.
Almost every choice involves a trade-off:
- Lower upfront cost may require more maintenance later.
- A simpler installation may provide less flexibility.
- Higher recording quality and broader coverage require more storage and bandwidth.
- Cloud features may add convenience while creating dependence on an outside service.
Those trade-offs should be clear before you spend the money.
I will also be direct about the limits of what I know. There are products I have not personally handled and situations that depend on details I cannot see from a website. Thirty-one years of experience has taught me how systems behave, how projects go wrong, and how service problems develop over time. It has not made me an authority on every product ever manufactured, and I will not pretend otherwise.
What I can promise is that the guidance here will consider more than whether something works on the first day. It will consider whether the system makes sense for the home, whether it can be maintained, and whether I would be comfortable standing behind the decision after the installation is complete.
